Prime Minister Mark Carney is in Europe Wednesday, with a morning visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, as well as an afternoon meeting in Liverpool, England, with the new British prime minister, Andy Burnham. In Strasbourg, the EU chief is prepared to give Canada a special, brand-new status: “Associate Member of the European Union.” What that would entail isn’t entirely clear as of yet, however, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen laid out some ideas in Parliament to Carney. Our chief political correspondent David Akin is travelling with Carney and shares the details ahead of the prime minister’s anticipated response to von der Leyen's invitation Thursday, during a speech to the European Parliament.
