Residents in the small English village of Piddington have held a symbolic vote over whether it should leave the UK due to a proposed asylum centre. The ballot is a protest against the Labour government’s plan to house over 1200 asylum seekers at a nearby former military site. The village has a population of around 350 people and has no shops or eateries, and residents say the proposed centre would transform the community.
