One day after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pitched to Mark Carney and the European Parliament the idea of Canada becoming the EU’s first “associate member,” the Liberal prime minister has responded. Speaking Thursday in Strasbourg, France, Carney said, “Canada welcomes this ambition,” adding that “polling shows that an overwhelming majority of Canadians support much closer ties with Europe” too. In a 22-minute speech centred around unity, Carney made clear that, in this potential new partnership, he wants to “secure strategic autonomy” with the EU through deep cooperation in critical minerals, defence industrial capacity, AI and computing, energy security, space, and payments. “Europe and Canada are stronger together,” Carney said, noting this proposal could help both sides close gaps in their respective strategic capabilities and resources.
