Thickening walls for better insulation sounds like a no-brainer… until you get to the windows. The moment you build that wall out, your existing window casing no longer lines up with the finished drywall - and now you’re left with an awkward gap that throws everything off. The fix is to extend the jamb properly. After insulating and finishing the wall, I measured the distance from the original casing to the new drywall and made custom extension pieces to bring everything flush again. Then I built the entire trim assembly as one solid unit before installing it. That way, instead of adjusting piece by piece on the wall, everything drops in clean with tight joints and a finished look right away. Do you build your trim in place… or pre-assemble like this?
