What is changing with UPI payments in India? On September 14, the Centre notified that UPI transactions up to ₹2,000 would continue under the zero-MDR framework. A day later, the detailed framework was announced, introducing a 0.4% Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on specified UPI payments to merchants above ₹2,000, effective October 15, 2026. There is no such charge on P2P transactions and merchants who get less than Rs.1,00,000 a month through UPI QR transactions are also exempted of any charge. Further, there is a cap of Rs.300 on the transactions above Rs. 75,000. So, what do the people actually using UPI every day think about these changes? We went on the ground to speak to merchants and consumers and find out what they understand, what concerns they have, and what they think could change after October 15. Watch the full ground report. #upi #mdr #groundreport #voxpop
