The Trump administration has formally moved forward with a $24.3 billion sale of 48 F-35s to Saudi Arabia despite U.S. intelligence reports warning that China could obtain sensitive technology through espionage or its extensive security relationship with the kingdom. Meanwhile, a separate shipment of F-35 components traveling from Australia to the United States was unexpectedly diverted to Hong Kong, including a canopy containing radar-absorbent technology, with the Pentagon confirming a shipping problem and officials working to recover the components. The security concerns come after a 2023 GAO investigation found that a contractor had recorded losses of more than one million F-35 spare parts worth over $85 million, while the Pentagon lacked complete accountability for the global spare-parts pool.
