At a press conference Thursday, Belleville Police Chief Murray Rodd said Sunday’s shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue was a deliberate, hate-motivated attack targeting Jewish worshippers gathered for Yom Kippur. “Make no mistake, this was a targeted attack against the Jewish community,” Rodd said, crediting two officers with preventing a mass casualty attack. Police said the gunman had additional firearms, a significant amount of ammunition and gasoline in his vehicle. Const. Jeff Smith, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his head and body, was making progress but faced multiple surgeries and a lengthy recovery.
