Motoring journalist Paul Gover says Australia has no fuel “sustainability” and relies too heavily on imports. “At the beginning of this whole situation, the federal government realised that we didn’t have the fuel stocks that we needed, but also there was a signature to an international treaty on how much oil reserve you’re supposed to have. We were nowhere near that number,” Mr Gover told News24 host Steve Price. “The other thing … we went from having five refineries to two, so we’re not as self-sufficient as we need to be in oil, and the way to get off that is always to have a buffer, not to be continually knee-jerk reacting to a short-term reaction.”
