Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry has declared a state of emergency after diesel reached a record $6.03 per gallon in the state, temporarily allowing qualifying farm and forestry vehicles to use normally restricted red-dyed diesel on public roads through October 22. The governor’s office says U.S. distillate inventories are 12.5% below the five-year average while net exports remain near five-year highs, putting additional pressure on farmers during harvest season. The emergency order does not lower diesel prices directly, but Louisiana Farm Bureau estimates off-road diesel can save farmers roughly 44 cents per gallon because state and federal road taxes are not applied.
