ProPublica reports that FBI agents were examining allegations involving Sen. Susan Collins, her aides, a pro-Collins super PAC and former defense contractor CEO Martin Kao, who told investigators that political contributions were connected to efforts to secure federal contracts. Emails and records reviewed by the outlet corroborated portions of Kao’s account, including a $150,000 contribution routed through a shell company, although Collins and her office deny wrongdoing and no one in her orbit has been charged. The later investigation ended after agents and Justice Department attorneys working on public-corruption matters were fired, reassigned or departed during the Trump administration.
