Tesla is facing a major civil rights trial in California over allegations that Black employees at its Fremont factory endured pervasive racial harassment, discriminatory job assignments, lower pay and retaliation, claims the company denies. California’s Civil Rights Department says an analysis found Black workers earned about $1,533 less per month than white workers from 2018 through 2024, while Tesla attorney Tyree Jones argued during opening statements that some uses of the N-word within the Black community can be a “term of respect and endearment.” The trial took another turn when former employee Ryan Edwards testified that a senior Tesla lawyer contacted him shortly before he took the stand, prompting the state to seek restrictions on further contact with witnesses.
