The Cornell 7 Case Is So Much Worse Than You Think

A former Cornell student’s lawsuit against the university, Chi Phi fraternity and seven former members has pushed a disturbing 2024 allegation back into the spotlight, while the men accused have denied wrongdoing and the local district attorney has reopened the criminal investigation for a grand jury. At the center of the case is an alleged late-night fraternity group-chat message, conflicting accounts of what happened, and difficult questions about what institutions and bystanders do when serious accusations surface. Due process matters for everyone involved, but so does taking allegations seriously enough to investigate them fully rather than treating silence as accountability. The Cornell case is now colliding with a much larger national fight over Title IX, institutional responsibility and whether people with power face the same consequences as everyone else.
