Clashes between student protesters and French police continued in Paris on Friday as they demanded better learning conditions and increased funding for schools. Around 400 schools have been closed due to the unrest. The protests have turned increasingly violent as they spread nationwide, with dozens injured and police making hundreds of arrests. Protesters say classrooms are overcrowded due to teacher shortages, with some classrooms containing up to 36 students. School facilities are also said to be dilapidated, with some locations lacking meal service amid poorly planned class schedules. While the French government acknowledges the difficulties students are facing in the public school system, it considers the protests irresponsible, after some school staff members were deliberately targeted, 65 of which have been injured according to France’s minister of education.
