Ted Cruz’s Protect College Sports Act has cleared the Senate, promising injury protections and scholarship safeguards while also limiting transfers, restricting state NIL laws and giving the NCAA and conferences broader protection from antitrust challenges. Supporters say college sports desperately need national rules, while critics argue the bill gives enormous power to schools, conferences and broadcasters without giving the athletes a union or a meaningful seat at the bargaining table. ESPN personalities, Nick Saban and powerful college sports interests have pushed hard for the legislation, while the Congressional Black Caucus and other opponents are raising questions about who benefits most from rewriting the rules. Now the fight moves to the House, where the future of NIL, the transfer portal and athlete compensation could be decided. Ring of Fire's Josh G. explains.
