Psychotherapist and Author Suzanne St. John Smith shares insights from her new book 'Childhood Myths' which finds that many of us form our identity based on conclusions we came to about ourselves as a child. Experts say those beliefs become an invisable operating system which we carry into our adult lives, shaping relationships and our identity. St. John Smith shares that childhood myths are formed long before children have the cognitive ability to assess whether that conclusion is accurate or not. "A child might experience dismissal from parents or criticism from key caregivers very young in life and they may walk away concluding they don't matter or they are not good enough." She says these beliefs can then lead into adult life where that becomes part of their identity. Experts say the best way to identify your own childhood myths is by working with a psychotherapist or other mental health professional.
