Questions are being raised about the effectiveness of the Canadian government's new foreign influence registry. It's now a legal requirement for anyone in Canada to register if they're doing legitimate work with a foreign government or entity to influence Canadian politics. Public Safety Canada estimates more than 2,400 foreign agents are currently active in this country, but the number of people who have registered so far is much lower than that. As of the Oct. 3 deadline, there were only two names on the public registry, and roughly 30 more being vetted by Foreign Influence Commissioner Anton Boegman’s office. Boegman says, “Like many registration deadlines, people leave it to the last minute… This is a brand-new registry. The requirements are brand-new.” Global’s Jeff Semple reports from Ottawa.
