After provoking controversy and concern when an artificial intelligence (AI) agent solved a math equation no human has ever been able to solve – OpenAI has done it again – precisely 372 times. Computer scientist and mathematician Mark Daley says if AI can easily solve problems that humans cannot, in the future it will likely solve much larger problems that humans can’t understand. Daley says “At some point, there is going to be a loss of understanding. And I'm going to grieve that as a human who wants to understand. But if that breakthrough leads to a new type of drug that cures 80 per cent of cancers, it's okay that I don't understand it.” As Nathaniel Dove explains, the hesitation about AI goes far beyond math. It's about whether humans are still involved in discovery.
