The founder of India’s ‘cockroach’ youth movement was arrested Saturday and more than 2,000 people were detained as authorities cracked down on protests against the Modi government. Protesters are demanding the country’s elections chief resign over the government’s controversial overhaul of the voter roll. Thousands of police and paramilitary personnel were deployed across New Delhi on Saturday, while mobile services were suspended and dozens of metro stations were shut down as authorities sought to prevent the protests. The opposition claims the voter registration changes would disenfranchise millions and disproportionately benefit President Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
