The Vatican has confirmed part of the Pope’s lung that was surgically removed was found to have a cancerous growth. The surgeons removed the lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung, and tissue examined during the operation confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma or lung cancer. The Vatican had announced earlier the surgery had concluded successfully. The 71-year-old Pontiff was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital to remove small nodules on his lung, discovered during a routine check-up. The Pope’s recovery is expected to take about a week.
