After revealing doctors had found a small growth in his lung last week, Pope Leo XIV is recovering in hospital after a successful surgery. Though the Catholic Church head was diagnosed with lung cancer – specifically adenocarcinoma – after surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung, his doctors say the procedure was intended to remove all cancerous tissue. The Vatican says the 71-year-old spent a peaceful night at Rome's Stremelli Hospital after the complication-free operation. Further information about the pope’s prognosis is yet to be revealed – including if the cancer may have spread to his lymph nodes – however, a Reuters Vatican correspondent expressed positivity about the “unusual level of transparency” the Church has already shared about the pontiff’s health.
