Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald announced prosecutions against 76 defendants alleged to have committed tax fraud totaling an intended loss of $490 million. These prosecutorial actions "include new charges against 31 defendants, whose alleged schemes targeted approximately $350 million in intended loss to the taxpayer," according to Mr. McDonald. "Let me be clear about who these cases are about," he continued. "We are not looking for the person who clicked the wrong button on an online filing form. We are not looking for the family that misread a line on their tax return, or the small business owner who inadvertently claimed a deduction but turned out not to qualify." "We are looking for people who lied on purpose to take money that they knew did not belong to them," he said. "People who intentionally violated a known legal duty."
