The default core, the baseline tone of modern Western film and prestige television of today, is something audiences are truly sick of: cynicism. Sometime during the 2010s, personally I’d say around 2013 based on Island-Man's emails… the entertainment industries, plural, traded the language of wonder and optimism for the language of cynicism and pessimism towards our perceived world and ever since has been losing audience trust. Without being able to put it into words, people have naturally just disconnected from the mainstream, almost instinctively. If you ask any normie on the street why they stopped watching Disney movies or why they didn’t like Stranger Things' ending or why they stopped seeing movies in theaters, what you’re going to hear is some variation of “It’s just not good anymore and it’s boring.” And that’s true.
