If you only get 3 reps on your set and your goal is to build muscle, here's what you need to do. See muscle growth isn't driven by a specific number of reps, it's driven by high levels of tension which you generate by pushing the target muscle sufficiently close to failure. You could do a set of 12 and get no growth if you didn't go hard enough, or you could do zero reps with a heavy isometric and get significant growth if it was performed close or all the way to your limit. So if you have an off day or miscalculate the load and only get 3 reps, you didn't "waste" the set - those are 3 stimulative reps that all count toward hypertrophy. That said, regularly going that low wouldn't be the most efficient way to train since a given set can contain more than just 3 stimulative reps, and for novices who are still working on getting their technique dialed in, it's probably not the best idea.
