The 2 set method is king?

This type of mentality screws up so many people's workouts without them even realizing it. They have a certain number of sets planned out, whether it's 4 per exercise or 24 per workout. And then they pace their effort based on that number. Rather than fully committing and making the most of the current set, they unconsciously hold back because they're always thinking about how many more sets are still ahead. So at best they end up with a bunch of 3-4RIR fluff sets with maybe a few genuine hard sets mixed in, and at worst the entire workout is just a bunch of low intensity junk. And then they wonder why they aren't making gains even though it looks like "high volume" on paper. Remember, your muscles don't care how many times you pick up a weight, do some reps, and put it back down. Total sets is still a factor of course, but tension is the actual driver of growth, and tension is produced by pushing those sets sufficiently close to failure.
